Hooked on phonics put to the test

As part of a preschool assignment (yes, there is homework in preschool), Abbie and I get to read together for 15 minutes everyday. Lately, she has become bored with me just reading to her, and since she has already learned several words herself, I have taken on the task of teaching her to read. We take turns reading words in the library books. Today when it was her turn to read the word in her beginning reader book , the word was "hydrant." I tried to help her sound out the different letters and put them together. She was starting to get just a little frustrated when she blurted out, "Hide your pants!" After we both stopped laughing, we discussed what the word really was.

She is doing really great especially when you consider she is only four, and sometimes she surprises me when she reads signs or things on TV. She's one smart kiddo and oh, Abbie how you can make us laugh!
